We have a 3 year old colt who was recently collected by a vet and tested twice with a result of 85% fertility per 100ml each collection. We have failed to get mares in foal to him using both natural and AI. We decided to have another look at his semen and the result was 5% alive, the rest dead, nothing like his first two excellent collections! We tested him again the next day and had the same result. The vet sent off a sample to the lab to test for bacteria/infections etc, but the results came back negative. His health has been perfect, his testicles are full and in good health, there is no discharge anywhere etc etc. He is a very relaxed colt by nature so there is nothing we can think of as to why this has happened. Does anyone have any suggestions?

What is his collection schedule? Some stallions are known as accumulators. These are stallions that do not void the semen in the urine and so have a large accumulation of old sperm in the epididymis. I would get another breeding soundness exam done on your stallion. More importantly have him collected twice within an hour or everyday for a week to get to his daily sperm output and to see if you get any better "swimmers". If this is the case then the stallion needs to be collected more frequently to keep only the good stuff around.
