In the breeding methods forum I wrote about my stallion still having an enlarged penis after he withdrew from the mare. I think this topic probably belongs here. Jos gave me some good advice and I'd like to follow-up. Two days after breeding live and not knowing if he had, in fact, ejaculated inside the mare we collected for TS. We use a mare for "encouragement" but this day he dragged the handler to the phantom and mounted rather quickly. I collected as usual but with my hand at the far end of the AV to monitor his reaction. His penis "belled" inside the AV and stayed "belled" after ejaculation about 8-10 secs. I guess he felt more comfortable using the AV than the kicking mare and staying inside longer? He certainly did ejaculate and gave me the best semen sample yet this season. I can stop worrying about this.
It is not unusual for some stallions to maintain their "bell" for up to a minute after ejaculation. It has been my experience that, the more they are collected, the less this occurs - the first few times with younger stallions is when I see it most often.
