Jos this is my first year of standing my stallion to outside mares. I have bred him to my own the last 2 years, but I only have 3 mares. I have several mares in and may need to breed on the same day. We only do live cover. What is the minimum time between breedings that is acceptable. Thanks in advance. Cathy

There is no standard time recovery period between covers. It is stallion dependent. A minimum of one hour will suffice with most fertile stallions, but unless you perform 2 semen collections and evaluations one-hour apart, you do not really know for sure.
As it is only neccesary to breed a fertile stallion/mare combination every other day, can you not plan your breedings so that you only need to breed once a day? Granted if you have a lot of mares that may not be possible, but the vast majority of stallions are not breeding large numbers, so rather than breeding 2 mares on the same day, breed mare "a" on day 1; mare "b" day 2; mare "a" day 3; mare "b" day 4 etc. as required. Note of course, when I say "day 1" I don't mean the first day of heat - no need to breed before about day 3 or even 4 in most cases!!!

Thanks Jos. I had planned on breeding on different days if possible, but just needed to know if I had to breed on the same day if once in the morning and once in the evening was OK. Sounds like it is. Cathy
