Yes, it can be passed to a mare when breeding. I would definitely not be breeding with this stallion until it is proven by a vet that he does or does not have Herpes. There is a form of herpes virus that can be transmitted to the mare during breeding - however that does not make it genetic, but sexually transmittable. The most common form of herpes that is considered an STD is EHV-3 commonly known as Equine Coital Exanthema. This is typified by pustules on the external genitalia of the affected animals. It is generally agreed that the animals are infectious only while the pustules are present and for a short while thereafter. It has been suggested that other forms of EHV (EHV's 1 and 4) may be STD's, but has yet to be proven or disproven.
