I'm sorry if these questions were already posted on the boards already.

I was wondering when is an acceptable age for a colt to start breeding? Shouldn't he first get checked out by the vet to see what he/she thinks? Would you breed to a few mares (1 or 2) to see if he throws good foals? Or do you go by the colt's bloodlines, example: the colt's sire foals are producing good foals?

How have done it with your colt (or stallion?)?

Thanks ~Amanda

The youngest stallion I've used was 2 years 10 months. I only bred one mare that year. The resulting colt was everything I'd hoped for, well, except for wanting a filly, but that's a whole different topic.

I usually like to give the stallion prospect time to show me he is worthy of breeding my mares. But in this case the stallion was out of my childhood mare and he had her sweet temperment and wonderful looks so I took the chance that like would breed like.
