could anyone shed some light on my stallions odd behavour he seems to be dribbling semen looking liquid from his sheat (small part of penis showing) just after excercise he does not change personality while doing this and remains placid and calm,, and is happy to carry on working is this something to worry about?
I'd suspect it is sweat you are seeing and not semen.
With the exception of one technique for chemical ejaculation that I've seen discussed in the academic literature, I know of no ability of a stallion to "dribble" semen, ever. Seminal fluid is actually produced through the real-time mixing of several glandular secretions just before and during ejaculation. The system surrounding this process is tied inextricably to the process of arousal, erection, and thrusting for the stallion.
In other words, dribbling semen while the stallion is quiet and un-erect is about as likely as a mare having a foal without being pregnant. Sort of anyway. . . that's the only metaphor I can call to mind right now.
For those of us who collect stallions routinely as part of our work, we'd be happy if the boys would sometimes just dribble instead of requiring the whole AV-and-hot-water-and-lube-and-on-and-on program!
My only worry from what you describe would be that he in fact has an infected sheath and what you are seeing is discharge. Have you cleaned his sheath recently? If not, I'd start there before doing anything else as a badly-dirty sheath is a problem that is both significant and really easy to fix.
When I lived covered my stallion, I noticed when he was fully erected and smelling the mare his penis was dribbling, I looked it up in my stallion breeding management book, they explained it as precum, not semen or ejaculation, it is due to masterbation, or as a form of lubrication for the penis to enter the vagina. Make sure you stallion is not masterbating while you working with him, if he keeps doing this I would call the vet and have him cultured for a infection just to be on the safe side. Has he been live covered recently?
Many thanks for that people, I have contacted the vet who said that it is unusual and not to worry but I do (they are our kids after all) he is not sweating when being worked as he does not get worked that long,, and I have not noticed him masturbating so to speak either, his sheath seems clear how ever I may try to get the vet to have a closer look at that part just to be sure,, our breeding season has just finished and he covered his last mare in January..
