My three year old stallion is galloping non-stop for hours, now that the mares are starting to come into season. I want him to have turn out. He works under saddle 4 days a week. How do I feed him for weight but not for crazy energy?
A feed called Strategy by purina http://horse.purinamills.com/ I swear by it! I feed it to my stallions, they get 9 pounds a day in three, three pound feedings. they also get as much hay as they want.
I feed Strategy also, but only a pound 2 times a day,and free choice alfalfa/grass hay.I am feeding this to a young colt who has tons of energy and runs around the paddock like the energizer bunny,I am also feeding to the rest of my herd, older breeding stallion who paces constantly, broodmares in their teens and twenties and some yearling fillies, all are doing good on it.They are all in excellent condition, maybe a little too chubby.Alot of stallions drop weight coming into and during the breeding season, and it can be a chore to keep the weight on them,I try to keep mine as happy as possible.Good luck.
You say he's running himself down in the pasture? W designated one of our pastures as a "no mare, no exceptions" pasture. Stallions and the gelding overflow are the only one's allowed to step foot in it and it did wonders for us. All of our studs calmed in less than a week.
