Hi Jos, just got a BSE on a 13yr old stallion, who has produced 7 foals in the past four years by natural cover(small number of offspring only due to not being bred often not because the mares don't conceive).

The specific genital examination states:
Both testes descended.
TSW: 12,2cm testes bilaterally symmetrical.
L testis - soft, smooth elastic
R testis - soft, smooth elastic
L epidid - soft
R epidid - soft
Penis and prepuce - no abnormalities noted
Remarks: Soft testes may indicate testicular degeration, which will impact on sperm production. L and R tails of the epididymides are also soft which is indicative of poor sperm reserves.

He was transported to the vet an hour away where it was unsuccessfully attempted a number of times on day one to collect his semen in an a.v.
One of the stallion's known mares who was ready for covering was used as the teaser.

The next morning, the stallion was put with the mare in the paddock and he jumped her and erratic intromission occured again on three occasions but he did not ejaculate. He seemed exhausted and it was decided not to try again.

He is is show condition and not worked, and does not have any injuries. The weather is extremely warm, he was in a new place with an audience, being hand-served(which he is not used to and doesn't like at all anyway) with the a.v. and he couldn't perform.
Could simple things like these play a part in him not being able to ejaculate and affect him the next day even? He manages alright at home, however at the beginning of the breeding season it might take a few attempts before he penetrates and then ejaculates.

Does the size of his testicles sound 'normal' for a 16.1hh stallion, and are the remarks in the BSE cause for concern?

Obviously I would like very much to have his semen evaluated and possibly frozen, but at this rate it ain't going to happen...

Many thanks!
