Hi

I have a 9 mo old tb welsh cross. Vet says left side hasnt fully dropped has checked him a few times and there has beens some downward movment but in light of the upcoming fly season she thinks we should wait and do him in the fall.

Yesterday I saw him express interest in a coming 2 yo tb filly in teh field. He mounted her and appeared anatomically capable of getting the job done, though mentally I think the actions were more instictive than they were premedetated.

None the less. roughly at what age do they start producing live sperm? I'm sure it's relatively case by case. I'm just not sure if I need to fence off another pasture and get him out of the main field. He is 12.3 filly is pushing 16 hands other mares are in foal, or 16H + and would sooner teach him some manners than show interest in him.

Anyones thoughts are greatly appreciated.

i always remove them spring of their yearling year, or when they show interest such as yours has. I did buy a mare once that was bred by a yearling colt (i didnt know this when I bought her) so it does happen!

Hello - They can be fertile from 7 months but I understood that if he isnt fully developed in that area that would be an indication that he isnt. However if you really dont want him to breed then you should separate him.

i have a 6 year old mare and a 2 month colt and shes in heat and he tries to mount her (quiet a sight) i first seperated them but after reading this it gives me comfort.
