semen from a stallion when he has died? I know you can extract semen, but what is the window after death, before it will be no longer viable?

Within 24 hours after death you can extract the testicles and the semen stored in them, however if the fertility of the stallion was limited, your chances for success are very slim to none. It really takes experts to do that. the Arab stallion Ghazal was castrated within hours of death and about 20 foals were sired with that semen, but the TH Hannover did that and I have not heard of a successful endevor since then and that was in the 80s.
You can, well the vet can, extract epidydimal sperm at gelding if the colt is old enough.
