hi all, i know this is a funny question but during august i was checking on my stallion to see how his testicles were growing. the one is slightly bigger than the other, but i heard that can be common in miniature horses wnich he i and he is only three. well about a week ago i felt his testcles agian and they were both shriveled up and very small. is this nomal for the winter and young stallions?? ps i plan to use him to breed, thanks nervous destiny

Destiny,
I'm pretty sure of this, but if not, Jos can correct me. The testicles are generally drawn up in the cold weather and you notice them down in the scrotum in the warmer weather. This is to keep them at a median temperature (protects the sperm).....warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I'm sure there are technical terms but
that's the jist of it. If they were down earlier, they will be down when it warms up. Hope this helps.

This made me smile as I have a two year old colt who is very well developed if you get my drift! A couple of weeks ago thought we had a cold spell and they disappeared! I couldnt believe they could disappear to such an extent and it worried me! I was assured though that this was normal and low and behold when the weather warmed up everything was back to normal!

Sperm have to be stored in the stallion's body at about 2° C below body temperature, so in cold weather the testicles are drawn up closer to the abdomen to keep things warm, and in hot weather they are allowed to drop down and be kept cool in the breeze.
