My father and I have recently decided to go into the Haflinger breeding business. This bred is new to us. We have owned quarter horse stallions before but they were already 4 and 5 years old when purchased. We now have a 9 month old haflinger stud. We are wondering what the average age is for a stud to starting dropping his testicles and to start showing stallion ways so that we may seperate him from our mares. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Most of this is new to me since I haven't been around horses since I was five.
Depends on the colt. For sure get him out of there by a year, but I have known colts younger than him who think they are studs. I separate our filly colts from stud colts about a month shy of being true yearlings, but earlier if the stud colts start to think they need to harass the fillies.
