I have a 10 year old arabian stallion who is subfertile. Two and a half years ago I decided to start him on TMZ for three weeks just incase there was an infection that was impairing his fertility. Shortly following the treatment he settled every mare he bred and I thought the problem was over. The next breeding season he didnt settle anything . The TMZ did not help. The last breeding season the same thing happened and in April we took a urethral swab before and after ejculation . There were few Strep C cells before and a heavy growth after. It looked like semnal vasiculitis. We started him on TMZ but nothing worked. The Semen looks good , good progressive motility over 60% concentration about 200 million and a gel free volume of about 35ml.Everything else is normal libido , testicles size consistency general health. Is it possible that a resistance to TMZ has occured and is there a better way to administer antibiotics. Is there a way at all to get rid of this infection. Thank you

What did the sensitivities show when you ran the culture? You did run an antibiotic sensitivity test to determine which antibiotic to use didn't you? Just simply using an antibiotic without knowing the suitability will minimise success rates...

With some stallions clearance of a systemic reproductive pathogen can be difficult, so often what is done is colelct the semen and extend it with an extender containing a suitable antibiotic, in which it is stored for 4+ hours before insemination. The antibiotic in the extender (as long as the pathogen is suitably sensitive to it of course - which is why that is checked) will then (hopefully) take care of the pathogen.

And yes, development of resistance to antibiotics can definitely happen - especially if they were not very sensitive to the antibiotic in the first place...

TMZ was on the sensitivity list along with about 10 more antibiotics . I did try the extender but didnt leave it for 4+ hours . I will try that.
