I have a stud colt and need to know what is a good age to start using him for stud.

You can try him on one maybe two mares as a late 2 yr old. But if you can wait I would give him a little more time to mature. And even at 3yrs old you should not expect him to breed a large number of mares.
Also make sure his first breeding experience is a good one..so he can gain confidence in himself. If you are not sure how to train him or handle him for the breeding shed it might be a good idea if some one who is well versed in this do so .
Also the Mare if he is to live Cover should be an an experienced mare ..who calm and tolerant.
A poor experience can affect his future ability and desire ... and is very hard sometimes to overcome.
