Hi I have a question I am hoping can be answered. we had bought a 5 year old qh stallion, had him gelded and kept him separte for the 5 days the vet said to do. We turned him out after the five days and he covered our 5 year old paint mare. My vet assured me that the fertility at this point was zero, but I have read some stories of newly gelded horses impregnating mares up to 3 weeks after gelding. has anyone had an experiance with this happening? If she was pregnant, she would be foaling around March. When would I be able to tell. Thanks for any and all answers! I have read on the net that there is a sperm ampule that holds sperm for 3 days, and after the 3 days it is not viable. So, just wondering what the actual chances are. |

Although it would be extremely rare, a possibility of establishment of pregnancy as much as 1 month after the gelding has been suggested.
If you have any doubts as to pregnancy status of the mare, you could have her ultrasounded or have an estrone sulfate (or total estrogen) blood hormone assay performed. Either should be reasonably definitive at this stage (~7 months). |

I was always told to wait 6-8 weeks before putting an older newly gelded horse in with my mares. I my self always wait a month. |

Was advised by Repro center to wait a full 8 weeks til putting new gelding out with mares.He might not have active semen, but the thot might still be there and I have seen geldings drop, get erect and mount and penetrate mares. I wouldn't want to take a chance even on an " opps pregnancy" in 1 of my mares or having a gelding getting 1 of my mares dirty prior to breeding season. Nor have the newly gelding stallion show any kind of stallion behavior.
Being a nurse.. the human male has to wait for at least 8 weeks with precautions taken during intercourse and then be RETESTED for viable sperm. |

well, my mare so far WOULD be around 9 months along and there are absolutely no signs. I will keep you posted though. |
