Earlier this year our stallion was injured while breeding a mare. The injury resulted in paraphimosis (he is unable to retract) after weeks of therapy, the vet, who has been awesome to work with, but not an expert in advanced reproductive treatments, is hopeful that our stallion should be able to recover. He is still unable to retract and it appears the reason is due to a "cuff" or three inch tall band of possible scar tissue that has formed around the penis about two to three inches above the base. Has any one had a similar situation and if so can you recommend treatment? prognosis? Or a vet who would know more about this type of injury we can contact personally? Thank you for your help.
I would recommend you (or your veterinarian) contacting one of three veterinary teaching hospitals that specialise in equine reproduction and who will have a veterinarian who will probably be capable of assisting. Those U's are:
Colorado State University;
Texas A&M;
University of Pennsylvania (New Bolton)
It is important that you do deal with the problem, as the possibility of a serious condition such as gangrene exists if it is not dealt with - and a stallion without a penis is no stallion....
