Hi! I'm new to this board and the whole breeding thing.

My mare was bred this year (last Sunday) and we find out on June 21st if she caught. Fingers crossed! On Tuesday, my (maiden) mare was acting really funny. Very sucky and needy, looking for affection from everyone and standing the whole day by the gate. This may be just me but I swear she knows something is up. This mare is normally a horse that will walk up, get her affection for 5 minutes then continue on to do her own thing.

My question is....do mares exhibit strange behaviour when pregnant?

I'm having a hard time with this whole waiting thing! ;)

YES YES YES!! I have a mare that is normaly very docile..when she is NOT bred..she is a watchdog, pack running baby sitting nervous FOOL! She was older and a bit run down when we first got her a few years ago so we left her open after her last foal two years ago to gain her some much needed wieght and rest on her mucscle tone..she was a nervous reck and tryign to steel any baby animal she could find!! Now she is bred..aboutr 6 weeks and is back to her affectionate, in your hip pocket kinda mare! I have heard stories of mean mares turning docile and calm after being bred as well as just the oppisite happening..I guess hormones can effect them as well as us.. I know some ladies that where just peachy pregos and some that made godzilla look like a gecko! LOL

My last mare was a very grumpy sort (kind of an understatement) and when pregnant she became very laid back. Most people thought I was crazy to bred a mare with her attitude but she was the best mother. She cared for her baby thou was very strict (not harmful). This resulted in the very quiet and manageable baby!

My fingers are crossed that my new mare caught - she is still standing at the gate and being very sucky....oh please oh please. Keep you posted.

;)
