AI'd live on farm an outside mare that showed a strong heat cycle/ bred every other day until she flat refused any attention from the stallion. The owner took mare home/ called 3 weeks later after their vet checked her open/ owners concern was that she came back into heat 2 weeks after she was home-novice owner thinks that she didnt settle because of AI. Mare is now here again had my vet check her last Saturday adn only showed some cysts, no fluid, mare is slight windsucker/ vet also mention he had 3 mares this year that cycled weird like that...any advice or comments from anyone-I have decided to use oxytocin 4hours post breed and then every 6 hours as a just in case...Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I also bred 3 other mares at the same time as the first and they all settled.//mare owner had only a culture done on her mare before bringing her to me. Mare has had foals before/ went open last year w/ no foal for year 2006.
regards and thanks
susan

The mare should come back into heat about two weeks after she ovulated if she's not pregnant, so there's nothing unusual there, and all it tells you is that the mare owner hasn't read the right pages in the book... Point them at the article about the mare's estrous cycle on the web site if they need more information.

If the vet is concerned about the mare coming back into estrus after 2 weeks of diestrus, HE'D better read the article too!!!! And if he has mares that don't have that time frame of diestrus, he should be more worried about them than the three that do...

Culture and cytology would be worthwhile on the mare. If they're not going to go for that, then certainly the oxytocin protocol is a good starting point.
