I am new here but have been breeding for several years. My question is this, when a mare ovulates, does the follicle get really large then decrease right before ovulation? Our TB mare was at 5.1 yesterday afternoon and was AI'ed. We had two packs of semen so the vet AI'ed her again this morning. He said she has dropped in size to a 4.2 and should be ovulating any time. He also said that all else feels correct, cervix, etc.

We generally bred around a 3.8 to 4.0 so one getting to 5.1 is new to me. Just wondered if this was pretty classic and I am just unaware because we usually bred before we get this far.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you can give!

April :-)

Predicting ovulation in the mare should be of help to you!

WOW, that is great information. THANK YOU!!!

We have been dealing with shipping issues from the stallion which resulted in my driving to pick up the semen yesterday, the mare has been more than ready twice already. There was a definite decline in motility overnight but our vet decided to go ahead and AI again this morning.

Fingers crossed for a beautiful, healthy foal. The good thing is, at 340 days, she will be due on my birthday, yeah! Thanks again for the information.

April :-)
