I have a soon to be 3 year old draftX filly. She mounts the other mares when she is in heat, or when they are in heat. Is this normal? There is no chance she's pregnant, she's in with 3 other mares and 2 geldings.
Are there any herbs or supplements available to stop this?
She did this last spring, and stopped during the summer, are her hormone levels higher in the spring?
This is not "normal" behaviour, and is suggestive of excess estrogen being synthesized to testosterone. Although 3 is very young for such a problem, I would have the mare evaluated by your veterinarian for the possibility of a Granulosa Cell Tumour or for issues related to a sex chromosome imbalance.
Let us know what you find out! It's an interesting case!
I have a 3 yo filly that does the same thing! She will mount other horses when in heat, and sometimes during playtime. She is an absolute harlot when she is in heat - lots of squealing, posturing, winking and squirting. She has been on the same farm with a stallion and I am curious if it will be different now that she is at home with 2 mares and a gelding (a 2 yo who was gelded in Nov).
In dogs they say that a female mounting other dogs is her trying to show dominance.
