I am wondering what kind of test need to be done on a mare before breeding. Do maiden mares need to be tested or just those that have been bred before? My concern is protecting my stallion and the mares from spreading any type of viruses etc. The stallion has not been bred before.
Hello Kelly, When having a mare vet checked for breeding you really are just making sure she has good tone in her uterus, there are no lumps or bumps in there that shouldn't be, that she is not pooling urine in there, she has no major cysts, that she won't need a casslick after she has been served and just that you are not wasting your time trying to get a mare in foal that will not concieve. All of that will be able to be checked via a ultrasound. You can have the mares tested also for equine STD's so to speak. But they are tests where the vet will need to take samples from the mare
