Not the stable vice! How can you tell if your mare is starting to windsuck?

I'm not sure if you are refuring to CRIBBING? But cribbing is a nasty habit that is almost impossible to break as it releases endorphines that the horse becomes addicted too. I have seen horses so bad that they will crib and wind suck more than they eat! The typical cribber will grab a rail of some sort and pull with their front teeth hooked onto that rail. But I have seen horses so bad that they do not need to use a brace they will sit and suck in air buy placing their head over something or just standing and gulping air. It can cause colic, wear down their front top teeth, and some will have problems keeing wieght on.

"Windsucking" in the reproductive world happens at the other end from the cribbing end!!!!

A mare that windsucks draws air into her vagina as she moves. It is as a result of poor reproductive conformation - typically, the labial lips are not tightly closed, the angulation of the labia is off the vertical, and if one evaluates the level of the caudal portion of the pelvis compared with the upper portion of the vaginal opening, one will find that there is an absence (or distinct reduction) of a vestibular seal. The end result is that there is no (or a greatly reduced) vaginal-vestibular seal, therefore allowing the influx of air as the mare moves.

The air itself is an irritant in the uterus ("pneumouterus"), and along with the air being drawn in, there is also an increased chance of pathogen access.

A Caslick procedure may be beneficial, but one must be cautious that it doesn't result in the creation of a urine pooling situation (which can happen with very poor conformation).

There is an article on our site about vulval conformation that will help you with further details about the reproductive conformation of the mare.

Thanks Jos! My mare does have poor vulval conformation, but according to that article I don't believe that she is windsucking. Her anus is quite recessed, and manure does hit the vulva on the way out. She is one of those cases that if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have bought her. That being said, she is on her 4th foal and thus far has not even required a Caslick's, and our vet didn't suggest it at breeding.
Jos, what should I keep an eye out for as her pregnancy progresses - she is 5 1/2 months right now.
