Wow...what a great forum...so happy I found it:-) My Q is, What is a safe antibiotic in late pregnancy. I have a mini Donk that is due in apprx. a month and I believe she stepped on a nail...she is favoring her right front hoof. I checked it all out and cleaned it up and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary (she also is recovering from White Line Disease...and that looked pretty good) I gave her 3cc. of Penicillin...I have used Penicillian in the past with my Donks with great success but never in pregnancy. My thought is if she shows improvment in the next day or so she definetly has an infection going and I need to get our farrier out here to find out where it is coming from. But if she doesn't show improvment...maybe she just twisted it? Sorry for the rambling on...back to the Q...what is a good safe antibiotic and dosage....Thanks so much for any thoughts on the subject...Teri

Your best bet would probably be to ask your own Vet...

For nail injuries, I've seen penn. inserted into the nail hole, not as a shot, but more of a medicine...

You can also moniter her temperature, if it spikes that's a good indication of infection...

Hi Laurie...thanks for your input , I really appreciate it:-) Your suggestion of the topical Pennicillin does work I have used it that way before. But there was no wound entry with Fawn's hoof? So...Dr.G was out here today ...we discovered well into the wall of her hoof there was an infection. It was really puzzling because we felt no heat on her hoof and she didn't really show any discomfort with a squeeze on different parts of her hoof. But after a little scraping on what looked like a soft spot on the outer edge of her hoof we hit "Gold" The infection started draining and she is back to the land of "Braying" I will keep it open with warm baths and Dr. G feels no antibiotics are needed at this time. **Though I did learn "penicillin" is OKAY? BUT...other antibiotics are better for hoof abcesses & always drainage ...as I knew..is #1

Well that's comforting to know that Penn is ok for Pregnant mares...what other antibiotic is better for hoof abcesses??? I'm always willing to learn something new when and where I can :-)

He works so good with me and knows I want to be self sufficient...he is awesome I have learned so much from Dr. G., But I will always need him involved with raising my Critters..no doubt !! I'll let you know what he says....Fawn is strutting almost perfect today
