How do you tell if your mare is ready to breed by rectally palpatating? What should you be able to feel if she is ready or not? Any advice would be appreciated. In the next two years when I breed my mare it will be the first time. What is the typical cycle of oestrus in a mare? How long does the heat period in mares go on for?
Rectal palpation is evaluating the structures present on the ovaries and the tone of the uterus and cervix.
It is not something that should be attempted by an inexperienced individual unless they are in the process of being trained by an experienced palpator, as injury and death can result for the mare if performed improperly, or as a result of a sometimes unavoidable accident. Aside from the dangers, it also requires many many (>100 is often suggested) guided palpations to become proficient, and many must be performed each year to maintain that proficiency.
Performing rectal palpation is not for the average breeder...
