I am trying to find information on supplementing broodmares with raspberry leaves to improve the odds of getting and aged broodmare in foal. But I cannot find any information on this supplement for horses.

What I have found for humans is that raspberry tea is an ideal supplement before and after delivery. It helps reduce blood loss during delivery, helps the uterus regain its shape, improves milk production and helps prevent miscarriage.

So my question is, is a daily raspberry supplement safe for horses before delivery? How much should be given each day? And how far into the new pregnancy should it be fed?

Hi - I have just registered here and came across your post by accident. Yes you can use Raspberry leaves I beleive they generally give it approx 3 weeks before until like a week after foaling but you can give it throughout pregnancy with no bad effects (you should check that though!) There is a good website for seeing what you can use and what its for www.hiltonherbs.co.uk they sell all the stuff too.

Hope this helps - I have more info on this at home (at work at the mo) Ill come back to you if you like with some more

Hi again Lisa- I have more solid info for you - sorry It took so long!

To help strengthen and tone uterine musle, to assis with contractions, checking heamorrhage and encourage cleansing of afterbirth.
You can give small quantities regularly throughout preg esp if danger of heamorrhage.
Usually given last 4-6wks of preg and after foaling for 1 week to encourage cleansing and toning of uterus.

For improving fertility the book mentions liquorice but this should be avoided on pregnant mares as it has oestrogenic activity

Thanks for the update Kim! From that and some other information I have gleaned, it sounds like the last month of pregnancy is the best time for giving the supplement. Now if only I knew when she will be due! She was pasture bred from last July through October and the vet on hand doesn't have an ultrasound for making a guesstimate. It's gonna be a loooong foal watch if she waits until September!

Hi,
For any of you that want info on supplements, including herbals, I recommend this web site.
Dr.Getty knows her stuff. She's been an equine nutritionalist for 25 yrs.

Hope this will be helpful.
