I own a dark brown part arabian x quarterhorse mare. I've noticed that her urine has become concentrated and a really yellowish colour. She has been squatting alot more when she passes urine. She's been getting irritable too. I've noticed her winking at the male horses but she seems to resent them. Is she in season?

Has anyone else been experiencing mares staying in heat for longer periods this season?
I have had 3 mares this season who have stayed in standing heat for 9 days. Two of the mares were outside mares, and one of my own. The one of my own is still in standing heat today at day 9. I thought the later in the year, the shorter the cycle?
I have just found it odd to see mares stay in standing heat for 9 days. My experience has always been 6 days at the most.
Also, the mare who is still in heat was literally squirting, not dripping, but actually projecting a thickish, slimy-looking dark yellow fluid when teased tonight. It looked like the dark yellow urine, but much thicker, but not like pus...I've never seen this before either. Especially projecting it like she did. Does this sound familiar to anyone too?

Sandy,
I too had a mini mare that was squirting thick liquid. It was early in the season, and only when she was in heat, so i didnt worry about it. She settled to my stallion and my vet is confident that all is going well, so no concern.

Based on the color I would suggest a culture just to be safe...that's similar in appearance to what was 'drained' out of my mare when she had an infection...

Hopefully Jos will swing by and say 'nah, it's normal' don't worry...be happy...

No, no smell at all. As I say, the color was the color of urine, but you could see that it had a much thicker consistency... it would leave strings hanging from her vulva right after she would squirt it out... they would drip off, but that was how I could tell it was thickish in substance.
