HI all, I have a mare that is due around the sixth of june. she is out with our gelding during the day then put up at night. The stallion is in another paddok. well my question is this. After she poops my gelding will go over to the poop move it with his nose then with his hoove then pee on it. now in the over four years that they have been together he has never done anything like this. is this anything to do with her getting ready to foal?
Yes it is due to her being in foal. She is giving off all kinds of hormones. Being gelded doesn't mean he is totally "de-sexed", it just means he can't sire a foal. Many geldings still can and do act "studdy" around a mare in heat - removing the testicles removes a major source of hormones, but there are other glands that still produce male testosterone, and depending on their levels, they can be docile, studdy, or somewhere in between. Nothing to get concerned about, once baby is born, he will probably become a very protective "uncle".
