I see this mentioned a lot on these boards, and I was wondering, what is regumate?

Regumate is a hormonal treatment for mares which can be used to induce heat in mares and may help to maintain the pregnancy of mares to prevent early abortion. It can help control the cycle of breeding mares, for example, to delay foal heat. It can also be used to manage behavioural problems associated with competition mares coming into season.

Can mares become dependant on regumate?

Do you mean as in addicted? If so, I doubt it.

If you mean will their continued good behaviour rely on them having it, I really don't know although I have heard some people who've used it to control mare-ish behaviour find that after x number of months, it ceases to work as well.

Actually, there is a form of dependency associated with Regumate use...

Mares that receive Regumate have been found to reduce endogenous (their own) secretions of progesterone. In other words, if you put your mare onto Regumate in the belief that she needs it to maintain a pregnancy, even if she doesn't, by the time you get done, she may, because you have suppressed her own progesterone secretion!

That's interesting - but it makes sense. Why bother producing it for yourself if your owner will pump it in! But it's HORRIBLY expensive if you don't NEED it!
