I have a 12 year old mare, supposedly open, living with just one other mare, who started bleeding from her vulva last night, today she has quite a bit of blood, comming in clots... I know her and the other mare have been at each other, but there is no obvious wound or painful spot that I can tell, that would cause this bleeding... The mare seems otherwise fine... Could this be part of her normal cycle?

It is not part of her normal cycle. Mares do not menstruate as humans do.

An injury is one possibility, or a ruptured vaginal varicous vein is another. If it is the latter, it is not a major concern, but does sometimes happen (more commonly in pregnant mares actually than non-pregnant).

If you have ongoing concerns, you should consult your veterinarian.
