I have a mare in competition who is very talented, but when she is in season she gets a sore back right above her ovary area which makes riding her more difficult and she herself is uncomfortable. So we tried a depo-provera shot which didn't work...now she is in season again and comes in almost frequently and it has been suggested that Regumate be used. We have taken a Hormone Blood profile, culture, urine analysis, still waiting for results. In the meantime it has been recommended to use the Regumate. When she is out of season she is soft forward relaxed and she is more comfortable in her lower back area....Has anyone had any experience with this or has any suggestions ????

there are a lot of show mares that are on Regumate to avoid the cycles. But be careful not to keep her on it too long. It can really mess with their cycles and their hormones over a long period of time. It is a good temporary solution only.

2 things to remember = one is that long heats are common first thing in the spring, and then they tend to get more regular
and younger mares are more apt to show soreness with ovulation. most grow out of it.

Mares that are constantly in heat or go in and out constantly often have an infection which should be treated. Sore backs are another symptom of internal infections. Mares going into race training or any other heavy competition should be Caslicked to reduce wind sucking and prevent infection. If she has had these symptoms for a year or more you may want to have a sensitivity test done to ensure whatever you infuse her with to cure the infection works. Long standing infections can be more difficult to eliminate.
