My mare and gelding have been together on pasture for four years. During this time the gelding has showen no interest in the mare during heat cycles (the mare did exhibit some mild interest in the gelding re: squatting and urinating). This year she had her first foal at age five. We have kept the gelding/mare separated (by a pagewire fence) for the past four months for the safety of the foal. Yesterday, I reintroduced the gelding. It became obvious my mare was in full heat at the time and was "very agressively" courting the gelding. The gelding actually produced an erection and tried to mount her (fortunately he is too short to make contact). Why would this behaviour happen now and should I be concerned other than for the safety for the foal?
