Hi guys I'm a first time breeder and I understand about Homo and heterozygous horses but i still don't get the concept of frozen semen. How do you unchill it? I'm confused. I need to know because i'm thinking of using this breeding method on my mare, she is a maiden mare so i'm not sure if she'll respond well to this method.
Look at the article about thawing frozen semen on our web site. It should help. The fact that your mare is a maiden mare will make no difference as long as she is breeding sound (i.e. has had a breeding soundness examination performed by your veterinarian prior to breeding and been found to have no problems). Note that the use of frozen semen is more complicated than cooled semen, so it is important to have an insemination technician or veterinarian who is familiar with its use performing the breeding if you wish to increase your chances of pregnancy establishment. It's not rocket science, but it does have some quirks...
Thank you Jos, You were a big help. I'll apply that advice.
