We brought our 7 year old mare for u/s today..it was day 14 since she was bred via frozen semen. She is open....will be u/s again tomorrow before vet gives her lutalyse; she did see a cl on the right and the cervix was closed. And so now, with only ONE straw and ONE last attempt, can you pass along some suggestions here to help increase her chances of conception? Vet was also going to do culture and cytology and treat appropriately...also, the mare is followed q6* when about to be bred. This is truely the final straw!!!

It is good that you are confirming a "clean" uterine environment with culture and cytology prior to breeding again.
As your mare is at day 14 now, I think if this were me, I'd feel inclined to wait a day or two before using PGF2a and see if she does show signs of estrus when teased, if this is an option. It would not be the first time that a 14 or 15 day pregnancy was missed on an ultrasound....! If teasing is not an option, the alternative would be to wait until about day 18/19 to ultrasound again before giving the PGF2a.
How many cycles has this mare been bred on this season? And were there any breaks in between? It is acknowledged that after breeding on 3 successive estrus cycles the pH in the uterus tends to be "upset", and the environment is inhospitable to a conceptus. If this is the case, I would suggest missing a cycle or two (although this will of course make a late foal).
The other thing I would do is use oxytocin and a uterine infusion of a broad-spectrum antibiotic post-breeding. This is to ensure uterine clearance. Theoretically, a seven-year old mare shouldn't have a problem, but as this is an "all-or-nothing" situation, I think I would use it regardless. It certainly won't hurt. There is research that indicates that the combination of both oxytocin and antibiotic results in a higher pregnancy rate, regardless of if there is any sign of a uterine infection pre-breeding (Pycock J.).
