Hey Everyone?! I am going to college this fall and I want to become a Equine reproduction specialist but i was wondering how wanted they are in different areas. I know i Would have LOVED to have one when i bred my mare and thats one of the reasons i wanna be one, not to mention i think foaling and the whole breeding experience is awesome, but feed back would be great or any info on the career. thanks! |

Elena, Just saw your post. From the sound of things on all the breeding boards, there is a great need for Repro specialists. I don't know why more vets don't specialize in it. Maybe the demand is too seasonal? Are the risks higher as in human medicine, so doctors don't want to limit their practice? I would think it would be so much more interesting than vaccinations and colics! Good luck on your career choice! |

I would suggest that if you do decide on this as a career. You move to an area which spends a lot of $ on reproduction. Like Kentucky or Florida. |

Elena, what a fun thing to go into. I do all the breeding stuff with my own mares and love it.. I also collect my own stallion.. And, have my lab for processing semen and all that fun stuff.. I do not ultra sound or palpate. 
You are in a good area for this kind of work. Have you looked at UC Davis, OSU, CSU or any of the others on the west coast? There are some really great colleges for Equine related stuff...  |

Do you have to be a vet to practice breeding techniques, or operate as a repro specialist. I realize there are certain things you couldn't do without veterinary accreditation but...can anyone give me a good answer on this??? |

you can specialize without being a vet. What exactly you can legaly do i'm not sure, but I know for a fact that a lot of repro specialists are not vets. |

Check the Veterinary Practice Act for your State or Country. It should define what one can or cannot legally do as a non-veterinarian. |
