I am new to collecting stallions and have a 3 yr old I am breeding this spring. I have a few questions about methods if someone could please offer some tips! I have AI'd my mares for years and taken shipped semen courses a few years ago. What equipment will I need to do on farm AI? I have a colorado AV with all necessary parts to go with it, but I am wondering about after I collect him. Once I collect my stallion, do I need to extend it and measure it before I inseminate the mare? How would I store it for the 1/2 to 1 hr it takes to prep the mare for insemination. Would it be better to put the semen in an incubator or put it in a shipped semen container with an ice pack and start cooling it?
Christa, there is to much involved in collecting and storing semen to go into on the board, I would suggest you take a course that goes over collecting and everything you need to do.
