Our stallion is currently collected at a veterinary facility but we will be collecting ourseelves next year. The AV that our stallion has been using all year is a 22" Colorado AV that is filled right to the top with water. Now, this is an older (16 years) stallion who pasture bred for 12 years and just learned to collect last year and everything has to be just perfect in order for him to collect. As long as it is, he's a dream to collect! He's a 12.3 HH Welsh Pony stallion. That being said, I have to order our own Colorado AV and was wondering if it would be best to just order the same size as the one the clinic was using to prevent our stallion from "getting finicky"? There is significant concern - and one we ourselves share - that the use of an AV that is longer than the stallions penis will result in heat shocking and therefore cellular damage of the sperm as they pass over the heated lumen of the AV on the way to the collection bottle at the time of ejaculation. we have a discussion about various AV's and their merits (follow that link) on the site. We have a preference for the INRA French AV (available from IMV - see the link below), and when we have used the Colorado, we actually use a modified model that we have shortened to about 18" - including use on larger stallions such as warmbloods. If dealing with a stallion with a shorter penis, we will use a shorter AV to avoid heat shock. |

Our stallion on average is at about 311/ml and is normally at a 85% motility so I assume there is no heat shock. I just wasn't sure if I should order the same size or drop down to the 19". Also, I have a choice of purchasing a Colorado AV with a large cuff end or small cuff end and had no idea what that means or which one I should be looking at. |

Hopefully there is no heat shock, but be aware that it may not manifest as motility issues (although that certainly is one way it is somtimes seen), but may simply be cellular damage that affects the fertilization and/or survival ability of the sperm. It's not a risk we like to take. The cuff is at the proximal end of the AV and is designed to both prevent possible injury to the stallion at the time of intromission and also to assists in securing the liners - both latex and disposable. The size of the cuff is probably not a significant decision upon which to base your purchase, as either will work fine in most circumstances. |

Thanks for the advice. To date, our stallion still has a 100% first cycle conception rate on fresh shipped semen and his sperm is still at 50-60% at 72 hours so I don't think we have a heat shock problem with the 22" AV. That being said, I think I will order the 19" instead. Thanks! |
