I am looking to purchase a bucksin mare to cross with my perlino. Both are homozygous paints and the buckskin is homo for black. She is registered as a black, and the for sale flier says smokey black/ buckskin.
What is the genetic difference between these two colors if the mare is homo for black? Would it just be the Agouti gene?
Debbie, a horse can either be smokey black OR buckskin, but not both. They need to make their minds up which she is! A buckskin has one cream gene and one black gene PLUS at least one agouti gene. Without the agouti gene a horse with one cream gene and one black gene would indeed be a smokey black. The agouti gene cannot be "hidden" in a black horse; in other words, if the horse has it, it will show itself as a bay or buckskin (in the presence of a cream gene).
