I have bred my bay mare to a dun stallion. I saw his offspring from last year and they were all duns. The stallion owner said that he bred 4 bay mares to him and all where dun except one. So is it safe to say that he only carries one cream gene? I dont know if this makes any difference or not but my bay mares sire was buckskin so what do u guys think my chances of getting a dun or a buckskin is. Thanks |

Marcey to answer your question we would need to know what color dun the stallion is. The cream gene is not the same as the dun gene. Does he carry both? |

To clarify what Cathy is asking... What color is the stallion "under" the dun? You see, we call dun a color, but it is actually a color modifier, meaning it takes a base color and changes it. dun on black = grullo/grulla dun on chestnut = red dun dun on bay = usually referred to as just "dun" As Cathy said, dun and cream are not one and the same. A horse can carry both, though. That's why we need to know what color the stallion is. |

I would say he is a red dun. I dont know alot about this color genetics but he has a red mane and tail. I think if they have that they are considered a red dun right? |

Marcey here are the options you can get. Sorrel, black, and bay. Each of those colors have a chance of receiving the dun gene so you can also get the dun colors that Jet described above. On a side note if you mare is homozygous for black you can rule out red based foals and if homozygous for agouti you can not get black or grullo. |

Ok from what i understand about this color genetics the only way to find out if my mare carries the black gene is to have her tested right? |

Marcey your mare is bay so she does carry the black gene. A bay is a black horse with the agouti gene. You can have her tested to see if she carries 1 or 2 black genes, and also if she carries 1 or 2 agouti genes for bay. Cathy |

So if she carries 2 black genes she will only foal black babies? If she carries 2 agouti genes what will she can she throw then? |

just bay based if she has two black genes as well, so just bay dun or bay. Bay dun would be dun with black points. if she only has one black gene, she could also have red dun or sourel colts, because without the black, the bay won't show. Above when you say she can only have black babies, she can oly have black based babies, Grulla, bay, Black pointed dun, and Black are all black based. So let me see if I get this. If i breed her to a dun i could get anything from a bay to a grulla? And I didnt realize i could get a sorral i wouldnt mind that. The thing i was thinkin was if i bred her to a dun or a buckskin i would have a better chance of getting a dun or a buckskin. I love those colors and i finnaly found a stud that has all the things i look for in a stud hes got conformation he is calm. And im not just breeding to him for his color i would breed to him if he was black. |

well you do have a fifty percent chance of getting some kind of dun We have alot of dun mares who also have the creamer gene and a red roan stud, you would be amazed at the color combos posible with that cross. I actually have a mare that crossed with my stud I can get almost any traditonal Quarterhorse color on the face of the earth! |
