Hi, I was wondering about Appaloosa coloring. I bred my 3/4's Arabian Appaloosa colt(Graying black bay with leopard blanket) to my 2 bay Arabian mares. What are the chances for blanket coloring on the foals? Foals will be winter babies due Nov-Dec '06.
Thanks :-)

Cheri,
When you say your colt is a "graying" black, do you mean that he is roaning? Or is he actually graying out because of the Arabian in him?
Considering your colt is 3/4 Arab, he probably is not going be a good color producer on non Appaloosa mares.
But since he does exhibit a good Appaloosa coat pattern, you have a 50% chance of him producing color on Appy mares, of course depending on the coat pattern of the mare.
You do have a 50% chance of him producing color and/or characteristics on non Appy mares, technically speaking... but experience has shown me that 50% may mean that out of say 10 foals, you may get 5 that have some characteristics only, no coat pattern, (characteristics meaning mottled skin, white sclera around the eye or striped hooves).
I used to own a beautiful black Appaloosa stallion with a huge spotted blanket. His sire was App, his dam was a Quarter Horse.
He produced 14 foals while I owned him and out of the 14, only 4 exhibited actual "color." Two had actual blankets and 1 had a lacy blanket and 1 had a few white spots on the hips... and these were out of all Appaloosa mares. He NEVER produced color on a non Appaloosa mare.
I do find Arab Appaloosa crosses beautiful, but if you honestly want to get colorful babies, I'd use your stallion on Appy mares and breed your Arab mares to a fewspot leopard Appaloosa stallion!
Let us know when you have babies, I'd love to see you get some color.
