Hello everyone,I'm new to this Bulletin Board...I am wanting to breed an leopard appaloosa..What color mare would you suggest I put to a leopard stallion..I have a Bay mare and a chestnut pinto mare..The pinto mare has very Miniamal white...Her sire is a blanket appaloosa,But she shows no characteristics of the appaloosa...Which would be my best bet to increase my chancesfor the leoprad foal..many thanx..

Hi,
I am kinda in the same boat. I bred my AraAppaloosa with nice leopard blanket to my 2 arabian bay mares. I am hoping for a least a little coloring!!
Hopefully someone with a little more Appaloosa knowledge than me will reply! :-)

Wendy,
If you want to increase your chances for getting a leopard Appaloosa, stay away from breeding to a pinto! If she does not have any Appaloosa characteristics, your chances of getting a leopard are slim to none.
I also have to tell you that the chances of getting a leopard Appaloosa out of a non-Appaloosa mare and a leopard stallion are also really low. Eventhough leopards look really loud colored, they are not guaranteed color producers on non-App mares.
If you're looking for a very loud colored Appy baby, I'd take your bay mare (with no pinto) and breed her to a fewspot leopard stallion. They are 100% color producers and do generally put a lot of color on non-Appy mares.
Cheri:
I used to own a black Appaloosa stallion whose dam was a QH, he had a beautiful huge spotted blanket.. his color production was approx. 30%, even on Appaloosa mares. The problem with breeding outcross Appys who have beautiful big spots is that they can pass on their dark spots, but unfortunately on solid babies, you don't see them!
I dealt with this issue for many years with breeding Appaloosas. I hope you do get some color!
