What color would I get if I breed my black and white tobiano mare to a palomino tobiano, black tobiano, Bay tobiano or sorrel tobiano stud? I was hoping for a buckskin or palomino foal for 2007. I will not be able to breed her to after she foals this year 2006. I wanted to know what color stud would be best to breed her to.We don't have our bay breeding stock paint stud anymore we sold him last year. All of the studs I listened above all great studs. The farm uses the same vet we do. The farm is well known. Thank you for all your help, MELISSA
Of the studs that you listed, the only one that would give you a palamino or buckskin would be the palamino. You would have a 50% chance of a foal receiving the cream gene, however, to get a buckskin the palamino stud would need to have the agouti gene. If he doesn't carry agouti then the foal could be smokey black. Do you know if your mare, the black stud and/or the bay stud are homozygous for black? The easiest thing to look at is the colors of the parents. If one of the parents is a red based color (sorrel/chestnut, palamino, red dun or cremello) you know for sure that the horse is heterozygous for black. This does NOT mean the horse is homozygous, but it helps clarify what the options are.
I forgot to mention that when you breed 2 heterozygous tobiano horses you have a 75% chance of a tobiano foal. If one of the horses is homozygous for tobiano, you have a 100% chance for tobiano.
JENN, My mare Annie tested homozgyous for the tobiano gene. I can't wait to see the foal from this year. I breed her to a bay breeding stock paint, before I knew she was homozygous for the tobiano gene. I also had her tested for the lwo gene, she didn't have it. Out of the tobiano listed above what is the best one to get a palomino or buckskin tobiano from?thanks melissa
Jenn, I didn't have Annie tested for the black gene, but I think she is homozgyous for it as well. Annie was breed to a sorrel and white tobiano homozgyous for tobiano last year had a bay and white foal in 2005. Also Annie has had black and white foal that was homozygous for tobiano as well. Annie also had another bay and white homozygous foal back in 2001.How would I determine the homozygous black gene, without testing her again? THANKS melissa
