I have a Palomino quarter Horse mare that I am thinking about breeding to this stallion: http://www.bedonna.com/Pepsi122605RSTrotWeb.jpg He is Homozygous for Tobiano. and he is a buckskin. If I do breed my palomino mare to him what possibly colors might I get? Like what percentage of palomino tobiano, buckskin tobiano ect.? I am just think this through before I choose the stallion to breed her to. Any input would be great.
If the stallion is homozygous for the tobiano gene then you will only get tobiano's from the breeding, no solids. As for the colours you could get Palomino & Buckskin (i think around 50%), Perlino & Cremello (I think around 25%) or Chestnut & Bay (also around 25% I think). The others may be able to help you a bit more with the percentages, not to sure about them.
If the stallion is homozygous for tobiano 100% of the foals will be tobiano. There are to many variables to give you exact % of colors because of the possibilities of the mare carrying agouti, and whether or not the stallion is hetero or homo for black and agouti. Here are the color possibilities which I believe are about all of them Sorrel, Bay, Black, Palomino, Buckskin, Smokey Black, Cremello, Perlino and Smokey Cream. You do run about a 25% chance of getting one of the double dilutes or solids and about 50% for a double dilute. Good luck deciding.
