I have just aquired a dun mustang mare with lots of primitive markings. She is a lineback, with the the traditional kiger mustang stripes on her legs. I am going to breed her to a donkey jeck next spring, and I want the primitive markings to show on the mule baby. I have two jacks in mind. One is a red with white nose and belly, and the other is a traditional black with brown points. Can you give me an idea of what the mule baby might look like? And is there any other type of jack that I could breed her to to up my chances of getting primitive markings?
Thanks
Joanna

Hi Joanna,

I'm not a donkey expert but I would probably pick the jack with black on him. With the mare being dun (I'm assuming she's a buckskin dun) and carrying a black gene and the jack carrying the black gene your chances increase in producing a foal with black if the dun factor is passed on.

Joanna I would go with the red jack if you want your stripes to show black tends to cover the markings your looking for.

I would generally agree with you Deena, however, dun markings like the kind she's looking for won't show up on a horse that doesn't have black on it. So that's why I suggest the black jack. :-)

Anyways, have fun choosing Joanna! :-)

Erm, a black gene, not colour. And the black jack gives her two chances at producing a foal that'll be born with a black gene.

I learn TONS on this site!

Deena, I saw a cute mule foal on foal watch born earlier this year, was that yours? :-)

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the info, I knew I could count on this site for an answer.:-) Anyway I am still deciding, but I am leaning towards the black jack.
