I just read my APHA mag and there is a new color gene called BARLINK. It is a new dilution that looks like creme or champagne but IS NOTSo far its just been found in the paint line. Its incredible that it was discovered and makes you wonder how many more color genes or modifiers are out there just waiting to be discoved...here is the link.. http://www.newdilutions.com/Opal/
There are many to be found, that is why they caution any doing breeding and is concerned with the "lethel" gene. If you must look at the genitcs in the color pattern to know whether you may have it, and should test for it. You can have a toby that is out of a toby/over and some think that it would not carry the "lethel" gene. It can. The color thing is amazing to me, still trying hard to follow it(was never good in this in biology either Trying to follow eye color and such. But they are saying that the more breeders are crossing patterns/colors it is opening a whole new line of genetics adn what is produced
Yes....it is amazing how many horses that are "minimally marked" pintos actually carry the LWO gene. Many who also look like straight Tobianos can carry it too. This happens because a horse may carry multiple pinto patterns...and one will obscure the other. You see this a lot in Miniatures, as there are a lot crosses made that aren't usually done with full sized horses. (such as Appys x Pintos = Pintaloosas) It's common to see Miniatures who carry multiple color/pattern genes, such as Appy, LWO, Black, Cream AND the Silver genes...all in the same horse!
