I was wondering if anybody had any more information on the rabicano gene? My palomino stallion seems to carry the gene with white hairs throughout his body and a coon tail and small white roan splotches. His colt this year has the same thing besides being a tobiano but lately -going into winter his whole face has white frosting all over it? My stallion has no white hairs on his face besides his star. Wondering if anyone has any information about the gene or a website to refer me to thanks. I can send pictures of the colts face if you want.

Tansy, I would be interested to see photos. To me this sounds like he may carry a sabino gene. In search the aqha site pulls up nothing for this gene you call "rabacano"--yet I seem to think I have heard that term before. APHA site pulls up information with the overo gene "sabino" I thought somewhere at one time I read that the sabino gene was the same as what people call the rabacano gene ??? To me the way you are describing his color and coat would be a sabino gene or roaning thing going on. The sabino gene can be found in many breeds of horses.
Kim, It can also be called rabacino gene, but was told that it is different than the Sabino gene. This colt does not have any Overo influence at all in his pedigree. You can see my stallion at www.brassfieldranch.com and see his colt when he was a lot younger there before all of the roaning hit his face. The gene you are refuring to is RUBICANO. This gene is mistaken for the roan gene but it does not effect the head and they have white barring on the tail heads. A true roan will grow hair back on a scared area its base color. A rubicano tend to show itself more evey year at shedding time and can show itself in a very odd patern as well( one whole shoulder being roan all at once) Sabino can cause the skunk tail as well as some roaning and it is not a trade mark of overo..in fact just the oppisite. My foundation bred QH stallion is a moderate sabino. Many of you draft horses i.e. Clydsdales are moderat to high sabino. The paint people like it because it does not carry the leathal white gene like splash and frame can. The reason for many crop out quarter horse needing to be reg. as paints for many years was due to the sabino gene. If you type in Horse colors with rubicano and sabino it will give you many sites to look at..have fun..its very intersting..
