I have a friend who bred a splashed white to a tovero, the resulting foal was all white, with a BLACK belly splash, and a BLACK chin spot and 2 blue eyes! He looks like an overo, but in reverse. Is there such thing as a reverse overo?? If not, what would you call this colour? He is on this for sale site. Renee, this would be called a tovero, In a overo the white normally does not cross the back line. The tobanio color the spots are regular and distinct as ovals or round patterns--the head normally has a dark pattern with a star, strip or snip as a qh, the overo Generally, the white is irregular, and is rather scattered or splashy--the head is often bald-faced, apron-faced or bonnet-faced--blue eyes are often present in the overo pattern. Tovero Dark pigmentation around the ears, which may expand to cover the forehead and/or eyes. Blue eyes, one or both, Dark pigmentation around the mouth, which may extend up the sides of the face and form spots. They may or may not have chest spots that very in size and can go up the neck, they may also have spots on the flank that expend forward across the barrel, and up over the loin. You state that there is tovero breeding on one side --the web site that this colt is at does not make mention of the tovero breeding , yet the photo of the colt is obvious that it is a tovero. This is a color pattern that you get when crossing a toby with a overo or a tovero with a overo and alot of times white is the predominant color in the resulting foal.
In general, remember that the toby the white crosses the back and the overo the white does not cross the back, the toby the patterns have form or are in the round or oval form, and in a overo the patterns are generally in the form of splatter white paint.
KimK Thanks. I just thought it was really odd that the white seems to be his base colour. I know this isnt possible, but i dont know how else to explain it. He is such an unusual pattern! So Tovero you think?? Interesting... Well, he's certainly a very unusual Tovero! Thanks!!
Renee, I know, sometimes it can be tricky to tell the patterns, it took me some time to figure them out and keep them straight. It is especially true when you begin to mix the two patterns together. Knowing if it is a single pattern or a cross between the two. There is a photo of a similar tovero at the link I posted, although it has a bit more "dark" color than the pic you reference to. If you always remember the facts I posted you can most generally decifer the color patterns... most the time !!
Thanks Kim, i went to that sight. I just wasnt sure. When my friend referred to him as a "reverse overo" i thought if that exists, it must be really rare! So i was going to snap him up and add him to my breeding program if thats what he was. Either way, he'd be a real little colour producer i suppose! The last thing i need is another colt though... Thanks!
Renee, your right, he should be a good color producer as he should carry both the toby gene and the overo gene, and maybe should produce black to boot ! I know, colts we just don't keep too many around here either ! Have a great night or day, I think we are several hours apart ! Kim
