I've have a chestnut mare bred to a grey stud for a summer foal next year. Both of her parents are chestnut. The stud's sire was gray, but I'm not sure of the dam. He is a bay-based gray, so I'm guessing his dam is a bay...
I'm curious to know what I could get with this cross. She produced a palomino when bred to a palomino.
I'm gonna put my money on a chestnut!!! LOL!! Sorry, I feel your pain...I bred my chestnut mare to a spotted black roan with a bald face and high stockings on all 4 and I got a (drumroll please) chestnut. Granted he's got more chrome then mom (2 hind socks and a wide blaze), but when the two of them stand together it's hard to tell them apart! He's a carbon of her!
My understanding is that you would have a 50% chance of gray (and roan) as long as one of the parents is gray (or roan). So this is very good odds but that darn chestnut gene pops up all the time, when you least expect it! My chestnut mommy is out of a bay mare and a black stud. The bay's sire was chestnut (this is where I think it came from, LOL) and the black studs dad had two black parents.
