I am interested if there are any books out there that specifically deal with different breeding techniques/styles to promote specific phenotypes or traits and how it relates to actual genetics and linage. Also, am interested in more info on "hybrid vigor", line breeding and in breeding.
In other words, is there a book out there that teaches you how to look at a linage and its good/bad traits and breed for specific charateristics that also discusses genetics and different styles of breeding.
Wally, I think the scope of your question would be well beyond one book. Think you would be better trawling through some Theriogenology Journals as most of your questions would (in my view) be pitched at researchers/scientists? Do some research into TB breeding to help you work through the line breeding question...it's called line breeding when it works and in-breeding when it doesn't. As you probably know, breeding close relatives can accentuate or "fix" certain traits both good ones as well as bad ones, nature decides which. Tesio did a lot of research into TB pedigrees and came up with a matrix for proposed matings, his book may be worth a read.
