I have a red chestnut varnish mare (pure appaloosa) that had red leopard parents..my mares colour is strange and does appear to be getting whiter as she ages, its fabulous to look at. Anyway..She is due to foal anytime and I just cant seem to wait to see what colour the foal will be. The sire is a palomino QH his dam was chestnut and his sire palomino. Can you tease me with colour variations please until the foal is born to pass the time..Im very interested to the possibilities. I know basic colour genetics but cant find much on appaloosa or varnish?

BTW...varnish is really the only colour that I can find that resembles her colour. It may have another term but cant be roan as she was born chestnut and had a blanket? I read that roans are born roan. I dunno..I aint an expert on the variations in appaloosa!!!! lol

well if the sire is Palomino, it means he is homozygous for red (chestnut) with one cream gene... unless he was tested or threw agouti (bay) based foals you wouldn't know if he carried that, and also having a chestnut based Mum for your bub means even if he does, you wont see it as your mare doesnt carry a black gene.. so lets just asume that you wont get a buckskin or bay in your baby colour possibilities :-)
Appaloosa coat patterns change throughout the horses life and will usually lighten with age... so foals get more spots, roaning, whitening with age.

Ok so to the actual colour possibilities... you could get solid chestnut, chestnut with spots - solid palomino or pally with spots :D

I want a palomino!!!..through all my years breeding to palomino stallion I have never had a pally born because we never had a chestnut or red based mare, we always got duns..although lovely.
We now have this mare (varnish) and a chestnut mare to add to the mix so I should see some pally foals I hope in the next few years. The only colour possibility you didnt mention was Pally roan...it was my first guess. Is this a possibility (maybe the roaning will come later in life). Ill be sure to try and add some photos. But that is kinda confusing!!!
