Hi all, I have a bay mare that i am considering sending to a blue roan stallion. His sire is a black overo, who is by a tri coloured pintaloosa. His dam is a blue roan, who is by a black minimal pinto. The mares breeding is unknown, but when bred to a chesnut she has produced a bay, a brown and a chesnut. (dont know if that helps any) What are the colour possibilities of this bay/blue roan cross? Any input would be fantastic- thanks!
Hi Renee, Well you have an interesting color possibility actually. I would say you have a better chance of getting a roan with the slight chance of getting a pinto. Does the stallion have any pinto markings at all? His "roan" could have actually come from the appaloosa roaning rather than a true roan. So in that case he could throw some appaloosa, but more than likely just a foal that will roan out with age. Since the mare has produced bay, brown and chestnut, she obviously has a chance of producing all of the above, so considering the blue roan stallion is actually a black, I would say you have a 50/50 chance of getting either a black based, or red based foal with either pinto or appy markings, or a solid, unless of course the blue roan is homozygous for black. Then you will have a black based foal. I know that's not a whole lot of help, but it's some kind of an idea anyway
Sandy, Thats great thanks- i really had no idea at all about how the roaning gene works. But i would be happy with a blue roan myself!! LOL Any of the possiblities sound good though! Thanks
